Who we are
Mould Consultants is the mould, air quality and moisture arm of Virotech.
Virotech was founded in 2015 to help New Zealand property owners and businesses meet their obligations under what became the Health and Safety at Work (Asbestos) Regulations 2016. In the decade since, it has grown into one of the country's leading hazardous materials consultancies, managing some of the largest industrial and commercial HAZMAT projects in New Zealand.
Mould Consultants applies that same discipline to indoor air. The same ISO 9001 quality system. The same evidence-led approach. The same conviction that a report is only worth something if the person receiving it can act on it.

Meet Scott Bower
Director and Certified Microbial Investigator
Scott holds a conjoint BCom/BSc in Environmental Management from the University of Auckland — a combination of environmental science and commerce that is unusual in this industry, and turns out to be exactly the right grounding for it.
Passionate about business process, growing engaged teams and service delivery with a "can do" attitude, he spent more than twenty years leading and growing businesses internationally across the consumer goods and wine sectors before he ever picked up a moisture meter. He moved into health and safety compliance while managing a medium-sized commercial cleaning and services business, and joined Virotech as co-owner in 2021 as Director and HAZMAT Consultant.
In 2022 he became a Council-certified Microbial Investigator, certified by the American Council for Accredited Certification. He remains the only holder of that certification in New Zealand. It required assessed field experience, the ACAC Microbial Investigation course, and examination against IICRC S520 — the international standard for professional mould remediation.
Scott is not a name on a letterhead. He is in the field himself, somewhere in New Zealand, and every mould and moisture report this business issues carries his peer review and sign-off.
He is also a WorkSafe New Zealand Licensed Asbestos Assessor, holds BOHS P402 and P404, and is listed on the HASANZ Register — New Zealand's independent register of verified health and safety professionals.
Scott lives in Mt Eden, Auckland with his wife and two children, and spends what free time he has free-diving, on a golf course, or planning the next trip.
What our certification actually means
Plenty of consultants will tell you they are independent. We are independent because our certification requires it.
The American Council for Accredited Certification is the recognised gold standard for microbial investigation across Australia and New Zealand. Its certification carries strict entry requirements, ongoing obligations, and a binding independence requirement written into the credential itself. New Zealand practice has consistently followed Australian adoption, and ACAC is where that leads.
What it means in practice is straightforward. We assess, we test, and we advise. We do not carry out remediation, we do not sell remediation products, and we take no commission from anyone who does.
So when we tell you a problem needs work, we have nothing to gain by saying so. Same goes for when we confirm there is no problem.

Our Regional Management team
Mould Consultants is owner-operated, with Regional Managers who live and work in the regions they cover, supported by a wider field team. Every assessment is carried out by one of our own consultants. Every report is peer-reviewed by our Certified Microbial Investigator before it is issued.

How we work
1. Talk to us first. We scope what you actually need before anyone books a site visit. Sometimes that is a full assessment. Sometimes it is a ten-minute phone call that saves you the cost of one.
2. On-site assessment. Visual inspection, moisture mapping and thermal imaging, with air and surface sampling where the situation calls for it. We look for the cause, not just the symptom — mould is almost always telling you something about water.
3. Independent laboratory analysis. Samples go to IANZ-accredited New Zealand laboratories, selected for the analysis required and the region you are in. We have no ownership interest in any of them.
4. Report and recommendations. What we found, why it is there, what to do about it, and what "finished" should look like. Written so a homeowner or property manager can follow it, and a builder or remediation contractor can quote from it. Peer-reviewed before it is issued.
Reports are typically with you within five working days of the site assessment. If you need it faster, tell us — we can usually accommodate it.

Regional Managers are based in Auckland and Northland, the Waikato, and the Bay of Plenty, with assessments elsewhere in the country coordinated directly through Scott. We are actively expanding our regional coverage.

We provide independent assessment and reporting for leaky building claims, insurance disputes, tenancy and Tenancy Tribunal matters, and construction defect disputes.
The same independence requirement that sits behind our certification is what makes our evidence hold up. We have no financial interest in the outcome and no remediation work to win from it — which is exactly what a court, a tribunal or an insurer needs to see.
